Why do Christians think spanking is so great?

Seriously, I'm a teenager and was adopted about a year ago by a christian couple (I am not a Christian) Just because the bible says not to withhold the rod from your son, they think it's like the only way to discipline, can't they think for themselves? It doesn't even work on me.
